Northwest District Station reopens

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

One of Mayor D. Michael Collins' campaign promises was reopening the Toledo Police Department's Northwest District Station 100 days after taking office. On Monday morning, it officially opened with a ribbon cutting ceremony.

Along with the mayor, Chief of Police William Moton and several city officials gave tours and answered questions on the renovated facility, which had been closed since June 29, 2012.

Former Mayor Mike Bell closed the station as a cost-cutting measure during his term. Mayor Collins, a former police officer, knew this substation was important to the neighborhood and keeping crime down, which is why he made it a priority.

The price tag to get the station back up and running was between $125,000-$130,000. Besides a fresh coat of paint on the walls, a lot of renovations took place in order to move in multiple units.

The station will be staffed by detectives and officers from the Special Victim's Unit, Domestic Violence Office, Canine Unit, and Traffic Section. In addition, the front desk will be manned by an officer to take reports and help answer questions the community may have.

Initially, the station will be open to the public Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Hours of public access are planned to be expanded in the future.
