An early morning shooting injures two, outrages neighbors

COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - An early-morning shooting left two men recovering, and Columbus police are looking for a suspect.

Police say they received the call Monday March 31 at about 1:30 a.m. in the 2400 block of Garden Drive near 25th Avenue.

"I don't think there's a day go by we don't hear a gunshot," said South side Columbus resident Moses Claiborne.

Claiborne says as the gun shots rang out, they served as a reminder of the sign of the times.

When police arrived, they say they found a damaged car and blood on the street, but no victims. Police say minutes later two men showed up at the ER by private vehicle.

According to the police report, the 22-year-old victim was shot in the back with a shotgun. The older man was shot in the forearm by a pistol. Claiborne and others say incidents like this raises safety concerns for their community.

"It's just like money, money, money just ruling this area and causing nothing but violence. You hear gunshots all through the night on the weekend. You wonder is it your child. If it's your neighbor's child. You don't know what's going on," Claiborne explains.

One neighbor I spoke with - who didn't want to go on camera - says the shots sounded like they were from several different guns. Claiborne, a life-long resident of the area says for him, this was the last straw.

"It seems like the police, the authorities of Columbus, Ga. done lost control," Claiborne said. "It ain't nothing but prostitution, and alcoholism and drugs in this area and it done got out of hand."

Because of this, Claiborne says he wants the city to take a stance on the rash of violence that happens in his area before someone else is injured or even killed.

"It's like a Sodom and Gomorrah in this area and it really needs to be cleaned up," Claiborne explains.

We have taken their concerns to police and are waiting on a response from them on the matter.

At last check, one victim was treated and released from the hospital. The other was placed under arrest for possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and theft by receiving stolen property after transporting the other victim to the hospital.

I spoke with police earlier who say there are no suspects yet in this morning's shooting.
