Troy baseball wins Sunday to avoid series sweep

ATLANTA, GA. (WSFA) -

The Troy Trojans baseball team lost the series to the Georgia State Panthers, but picked up a win on Sunday to prevent the sweep.

Troy dropped the series opener to the Panthers by a score of 8-6 in Atlanta. Troy scored three runs in the fourth inning to take the lead, but the Panthers would reclaim the advantage in the fifth and would not give it up.

Tanner Hicks of the Trojans was hit with the loss after going only 4 1/3 innings and allowing five earned runs on seven hits. He struck out three batters and walked two.

David Hall, Garrett Pitts, Matthew Howard and Nick Masonia all recorded two hits each to lead the Trojans.

On Saturday, the Trojans gave up six runs in the first three innings on three Troy errors. The six runs would prove to be the difference in the game as the Panthers won by a score of 6-3.

Nick Masonia led the Trojan offense going 3-for-4, and Shane McCain was saddled with the loss after allowing three earned runs.

Troy was able to avoid the sweep on Sunday, beating Georgia State by a score of 13-9.

The Trojans were trailing 8-2 in the fifth inning when the bats came alive as they recorded eight runs on seven hits. Clay Holcomb and Garrett Pitts were able to bat twice in the inning and helped Troy obtain a 10-8 lead.

Pitts led the Trojans, going 4-for-5 on the day with four RBI, while David Hall and Holcomb had three hits each. Troy would record 18 hits in the game, setting a new season high.

Jeremy McGowan entered the game in the fourth and pitched 5 1/3 innings to earn the win. McGowan allowed one run on four hits while striking out two and walking three batters.

The Trojans are 15-13 this season, next travel to Birmingham to face UAB.
