SMITHS STATION, AL (WTVM) -

Lee County Sheriff Jay Jones confirms a man accused of leading police on a pursuit at speeds approaching 100 m.p.h. was arrested just before 11 p.m. Monday with the assistance of Phenix City Police.

Chris Gordy, 42, is in custody following a five hour search through the woods and surrounding neighborhoods.

Witnesses said Gordy crashed while trying to pass another car on Lee County Road 248.  The accident destroyed his Honda Passport and sent the driver of the van he hit to a hospital.  The other person involved is expected to be okay.

Prior to the accident, deputies were sent to Lee Road 430 for a report of a domestic dispute and assault.   Gordy was originally spotted leaving that house and deputies chased him for a few minutes before calling it off due to traffic conditions.

According to the sheriff, Gordy continued speeding even after deputies ended their pursuit and that's when he caused the collision.
