The Georgia NAACP has announced the launch their own independent investigation following the shooting death of 20-year-old Zikarious Jaquan Flint on the Columbus State University Campus. Flint was fatally shot by a campus police officer on Sunday, March 30.

"Putting aside legal questions, this story began when someone spotted a young black man believed to be up to 'no good.' American history is filled with tragedies that began just that way," said Dr. Francys Johnson, State President of the Georgia NAACP.

Police said Flint was putting a bullet into his gun when they approached him. There was a foot chase, and Flint was shot by an officer. Attorney Stacey Jackson later said three witnesses he interviewed told him Flint was running when he was shot, and did not have any type of weapon in his hand. However, Police now say the gun was recovered at the scene with Flint.

In a press release, NAACP officials expressed, "There are many unanswered questions surrounding this deadly shooting for which the NAACP will expect answers. Some answers will take longer than others but the name(s) of the officer(s) involved in the shooting should be released immediately."

The organization also expressed their condolences to the family and support for the CSU student body.
