COLUMBUS, GA (WXTX) - Taking a break from school to fight bullies – that's what dozens of Muscogee County students did today at the D.A. Turner YMCA.
The D.A. Turner YMCA joined forces with Grace Barra Jujitsu School to teach students how to spot bullying and ways to counter it.
Instructors told students it's important for students to first ignore the bully. Report them next, and if nothing is done, defend themselves.
It's a lesson folks at the YMCA say goes hand-in-hand with what they're teaching.
"Youth development is a key to success with the kids in our programs," said Jed Tuiolosega, YMCA child care director. "So, bringing some group in to kind of piggyback off what we're trying to develop with their character and development is a great opportunity us, the YMCA and Gracie Barra."
Jujitsu instructors urge that students only use step 3 - defending themselves - as a last resort.
