The goals of this program are to improve management of heart failure (HF) and to review dietary strategies for patients with atherosclerotic vascular disease. After hearing and assimilating this program, the clinician will be better able to:

1. Classify severity of HF based on ejection fraction and symptoms.

2. Choose appropriate medications for HF, such as angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors and B-blockers.

3. Recognize patients who may benefit from implantable cardioverter defibrillators and cardiac resynchronization therapy.

4. Describe heart-healthy diets, such as the Ornish diet and the Therapeutic Lifestyle Changes diet.

5. List dietary sources of soluble fiber, phytosterols, and omega-3 fatty acids.
