KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

Baseball season in Kansas City is finally here and fans crowded in early to Kauffman Stadium and its parking lots to cheer on the Royals.

While the game against the Chicago White Sox didn't begin until 3:10 p.m., many fans had been outside tailgating since 9 a.m.

The smell of ribs, burgers and chicken on the grill wafted through the air. Some kids skipped class and some adults skipped work to attend.

Many said the home opener is full of hope, not just for the team, but the fans as well.

"It's what life is about in Kansas City in the spring. You go to the stadium, you have a few brats, a few beers and just relax and enjoy the Royals. It doesn't matter if they're winning or losing – we'd like to have them win – but it's just fun being out here. I'm originally from the Los Angeles area and there's nothing like this in L.A.," said John Agre.

Even after the game began, many still lingered outside of the stadium enjoying the cool spring weather and a Friday at the ballpark.
