HAMMOND, LA (WAFB) -

Fire investigators say a house fire has claimed the life of an elderly Hammond resident.  The fire happened in the 500 block of Phoenix Square just before 8:30 pm Friday.

Neighbors noticed the fire burning and called 911.  When firefighters arrived on the scene they found the home fully engulfed in flames.  After extinguishing the fire, the body of Nathaniel Kelly, 74, was found in one of the bedrooms.

Investigators believe the fire started in a hallway near the center of the home, but the exact cause has yet to be determined. The fire remains under investigation.
