KSLA News 12 Editorial: April 8th-Food Stamp Fraud

Posted: Updated:

It was last October when an electronic outage resulted in a large number of food stamp recipients over spending on their monthly benefits.

It happened at this Walmart store in Springhill, Louisiana. People filled up their carts to overflowing because there was suddenly no limit on their food stamp cards. The investigation into that incident is still going on.  30 recipients have been disqualified so far. More will be.

During the outage, there were more than 12,000 purchases that were made over the limit. As the investigation continues, and more disqualifications occur, we need to be mindful of the impact this will have on the children of those families. Because of the actions of their parents, the children may be the ones to suffer the most.
