CARROLL COUNTY, GA (WBRC) -

The man accused of carjacking a taxi and leading authorities on a vehicle chase is in custody for several crimes.

Rodney DeWayne Smith, 20, was arrested April 8 after he and Kimberly R. Duggar, 20, allegedly left the scene of a house fire in Carrollton, Ga., carjacked a taxi and lead officers on a pursuit.

Smith allegedly drove the stolen taxi and the chase ended when the vehicle struck the back of a flatbed 18-wheeler, ran off the road and crashed into some woods off I-20 westbound near Heflin.

The couple's four-year-old daughter was in the taxi with them at the time of the chase. Heflin Police say she suffered a gash to her head but is expected to be OK.

Smith, whose arrest record shows he is from Birmingham, has been charged with various crimes including fleeing a police officer, driving with a withdrawn license and possession of a firearm during a felony.

Duggar is listed in fair condition at UAB.
