TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

Tucson Sector Border Patrol have intercepted nearly $538,000 worth of marijuana, seized five vehicles and arrested 16 people in connection with drug smuggling since March 24, according to a release from the agency.

The first arrest took place on March 24. Agents at the Highway 90 checkpoint near Sierra Vista arrested a man after he attempted to smuggle over 85 pounds of marijuana.

Officials say he had concealed the bundles of drugs inside a hollow area under the rear passenger seat and inside the left rear quarter panel of a Lincoln Navigator. The drugs were worth approximately $42,800.

That same day, four illegal immigrants were arrested trying to cross the border in a Dodge pickup at the Highway 191 checkpoint near Elfrida.

On March 29, agents seized more than 990 pounds of marijuana, worth more than $495,000. Agents from the Brian A. Terry Station were informed by camera-system operators that 18 people carrying large packs were attempting to cross near Naco.

Agents attempted to catch the people, but the smugglers dropped the 53 bundles of marijuana and escaped back into Mexico.

On April 1, agents using an X-ray device at the I-19 checkpoint near Tubac arrested a woman who was attempting to smuggle two men across the border in the trunk of a Dodge Neon. The woman was a U.S. citizen and the two men were Mexican nationals.

On the following Saturday, two more illegal immigrants were found in the trunk of a Chevrolet Camaro at the State Route 80 checkpoint near Tombstone. Wilcox Border Patrol agents arrested two men, both U.S. citizens, for alien smuggling. The car was also seized.

On April 6, four people were arrested for alien smuggling and being in the U.S. illegally at the I-19 checkpoint. The Pontiac sedan involved was seized.

All of the people apprehended will be presented for prosecution. The drugs and cars were processed for seizure.
