Owen Ditchfield officially announces run for MCSB

COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) -

Owen Ditchfield officially announced his candidacy for the at-large post on the Muscogee County School Board (MCSB) Thursday, April 10.

"This campaign is about one thing, and one thing only: The kids in the classroom. That's what it's always been about," Ditchfield says.

Even though Ditchfield is not currently serving on the Board, this is not his first experience with MCSB.

"When I was on the school board my first term, from 2001 to 2004, I developed a reputation for being independent, and voting for what I thought was best for the children and the teachers," he says.

Ditchfield also worked as an educator for 36 years, teaching 5th grade, 8th grade, and working as a media specialist at Fort Benning Schools. He believes this experience makes him uniquely qualified for the position.

Durning his campaign announcement, Ditchfield said he plans to propose and support policies that will accomplish three goals:

-To see that each student gets the best possible education, no matter their background, race or where they live in the community.

-To see that they learn more than just the basics of an education, but the even more basic life lesson that people who work hard and play by the rules are more likely to be successful in life than those who don't.

-That supporting public education is important even if you don't have kids in public schools, to insure that our upcoming generations have a solid foundation on which to build successful lives, contributing to the progress of our city.

"I hope everyone will turn out to vote. I think if they look at all the qualifications of all the candidates, I hope they will decide I am the best qualified, especially since I have 36 years of teaching and four years on the school board already," Ditchfield says.

Ditchfield is a veteran of the Vietnam War, a volunteer tour guide at the National Infantry Museum, president of the South Columbus Concerned Citizens, an active member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, and can be found on Saturday mornings at Market Days on Broadway selling produce from his garden.
