FORT BENNING, GA (WTVM) -

The best of the best were out at Fort Benning this weekend taking part in this year's Best Ranger Competition, which began at 6 a.m. on Friday, April 11.

The three-day competition was established in 1982, and has been compared to the Ironman and Eco-Challenge competitions.

Competitors from the entire US Armed Forces trained for months to be a part of the event.

It started with 50 teams, but by Sunday evening only one pair was able truly call themselves the best after taking part in a 60 hour test of endurance.

Monday's ceremony honored all of the men of this year's competition, but a special tribute was given to Second Lieutenant Michael Rose and Second Lieutenant John Bergman. The team was able to come from behind in second place Sunday to take home the victory.

"I can't even imagine, we've only been in the Army for a little over a year and a half so it's hard for me to even imagine...it's just an amazing experience," said Bergman.

Bergman says the 25th Infantry Division hasn't won the competition in almost 20 years, so he and Rose were honored to win for them this year.

Participants are tested for their physical conditioning, Ranger skills and team strategies. Events were purposely scheduled back-to-back and around the clock for 60 hours, allowing little time for rest and meals. All events were timed, and competitors scored points for each completed event.

Event organizers predicted that over the course of the competition, each Ranger covered up to 75 miles with little or no sleep.

They were tested on activities such as buddy runs, stress shooting, land navigation, and water survival, among others.

All competitors are graduates of the US Army Ranger School at Fort Benning, and represented all branches of the Armed Services.

Rounding out the top three is the 75th Ranger Regiment team of Staff Sgt. Christopher Broussard and Sgt. 1st Class Charles Cogle, who finished ahead of fellow Ranger Regiment competitors, Cpl. Daniel Puckett and Staff Sgt. Eric Adams.
