AUBURN, AL (WTVM) -

Auburn Junior High School honored one of its own today with a surprise celebration.

William Taylor, a ninth grade history teacher and a sergeant in the Army Reserve has received word that he will be deployed overseas in the coming months.

This is Sgt. Taylor's first year teaching and his first deployment.

Mayor Bill Ham surprised Sgt. Taylor with a proclamation declaring April 10 2014 William Taylor Day in the city of Auburn.

"This was amazing. I have to thank Mayor Ham and the entire community for coming out and doing this for me. I was speechless to see all the students out here and finding out its my day, this is special to me," said Sgt. Taylor. "It's bittersweet, but I'm ready to go over and do my mission over there for operation enduring freedom."

Sgt. Taylor was born and raised in Springville, Ala.

He is not sure how long his deployment will last, but we wish him the very best and thank him for his service.
