Crisis Center of Russell Co. Eggstravaganza raises sexual assault awareness

April is Sexual Assault Awareness month, and because sexual assault can be a heavy, difficult topic to address, the Crisis Center of Russell County decided to throw a positive event to raise awareness to the issue.

Over a hundred people attended their Easter Eggstravaganza event this afternoon, which featured an egg hunt, face painting, food, fun and information on sexual assault.

Caitlyn Riggs, Rape Crisis Coordinator and Prevention Educator with the Crisis Center, says they chose to host a family event on sexual assault because it is important for parents to talk to their children about the issue, and especially help them understand the difference between good touch and bad touch.

"It's very important for parents to understand that it is a good thing to make sure that their children are aware, because the best way to stop the cycle of any of these assaults is to educate so that we can prevent it before it actually happens," says Riggs.

Children at the event also made art out of their hand prints, which will decorate a new shelter the crisis center plans to build.

The center provides advocacy, legal support and emergency housing for victims of sexual assault. For more information, visit
