SB: Off outing for Fowler costly for Cats

BERKELEY, CA -

Arizona pitchers issued seven walks, six of which would end up scoring, as the Wildcats were run-ruled for the first time this season in a 9-1 decision at California Saturday.

Arizona (33-9, 8-6 Pac-12) managed just four hits off of Cal starter Stephanie Trzcinkski, three of which came off the bat of Kelsey Rodriguez, who was responsible for Arizona's lone run of the game on a solo homer in the first inning.

Wildcat pitchers allowed just six hits in the six-inning loss, but issued seven free passes in the game. Arizona's defense did not commit an error.

Cal (21-16, 4-5 Pac-12) scored seven runs in the first inning on just two hits. After a leadoff double and a strikeout, Kenzie Fowler (7-4) walked the next four batters she faced, bringing in two runs to surrender Arizona's lead. Estela Piñon entered and walked in a run before giving up a grand slam to Vanessa Alvarez to give Cal a 7-1 lead after one inning.

Arizona rarely threatened offensively afterward, putting a runner in scoring position just twice the rest of the game, both coming with two out in an inning.

After three innings of one-hit ball from Piñon, Babcock entered in the fifth and issued a leadoff walk in the fifth. After a pair of singles, Allea Laxamana hit a sacrifice fly to extend Cal's lead to seven runs.

Cheyenne Cordes hit a leadoff homer in the sixth to end the game.

Arizona and Cal wrap up the series Sunday at noon on the Pac-12 Network.
