CENTER POINT, AL (WBRC) -

A seven-year-old boy brought a loaded gun to Center Point Elementary on Thursday, the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office says.

A teacher noticed the child showing the handgun to another student and immediately took it away, Chief Deputy Randy Christian said. The teacher reported it to the school's principal and a School Resource Officer from the sheriff's office. The boy's parents were notified and came to the school.

Authorities say the loaded weapon belonged to the boy's grandfather. They are still trying to determine how he got the handgun.

"The lesson is that gun owners and weapon owners take care and security of their weapons at all times, it's paramount under all circumstances. One must know where one's  weapons are and who's control they are in," Lt. Mendall Major, who is over all of Jefferson County's School Resource Officers, said.

Authorities say the child is too young to face criminal charges under Alabama law. The student has been suspended from school pending a disciplinary hearing with the Jefferson County Board of Education, Christian said.

Lt. Major could not say if the child's grandfather will be charged in the case.

Center Point Elementary School reopened on Monday. It was closed for more than two years after a tornado took off the school's roof in 2012. CEPS students attended Erwin elementary and middle schools while their school was being rebuilt.
