Muscogee Roller Girls prepare to win their second home game

COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - The Muscogee Roller Girls Derby is preparing to take on their second home game on April 26, 2014. Muscogee Roller Girls was founded in April 2012, and the team competes with other local women derby teams from March to October once a week.

"We usually have games once a month," said Alan Phillips, the head referee of the team. "The team practices at least three days to prepare for each game."

The Muscogee Roller Girls is a women's flat-track roller derby league with members from Columbus and surrounding areas like Fort Benning, Phenix City and Harris County. There are currently 20 skaters, and men are encouraged to participate as referees, volunteers and more.

Many players obtain bruises and wounds from just practices alone. Players bump and often hit each other when they are on the rink.

"It's not easy," Phillips said. "Players are dedicated and passionate. They want to practice to do well."

Addie Brawl is the blocker for the team. She has been playing derby with the Muscogee Roller Girls for two years.

"We are going to win the game against Tallahassee Jailhouse Betties on the 26th," Brawl said. "That is our goal for now. We are practicing hard for this."

Muscogee Roller Girls 2014 home bout schedule is as follows:

April 26 vs Tallahassee Jailhouse Betties

May 17 vs Beach Brawl Skater Dolls

June 21 vs Marietta Derby Darlins

August 16 vs Fort Stewart Roller Girls

September 20 vs River Region Roller Girls
