LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - More than 16,000 runners hit the pavement in a road race that wound through the heart of the metro, ran a lap around the infield at Churchill Downs, and for full marathon runners, took a trek through Iroquois Park.

Crossing the finish line wasn't the highlight of the day, however, for runner Ben Griggs.

"I'm pretty calm right now," Griggs said.

Patient yet jittery, Griggs waited for his girlfriend to finish, but not because he's competitive against his sweetheart.

"She'll be happy in the long run," he said. Now, he's in it for the long run.

Griggs held up a poster asking his longtime girlfriend to marry him as she finished the race.

Aly Ulrich said yes after Griggs knelt down on one knee.

"I was like oh gosh, here come the tears," Ulrich said. "I'm not very happy that I'm on TV with no makeup, all sweaty and salty, but whatever - I don't care. I'm happy."
