One dead, two injured in Jerusalem Township rollover crash

A 14-year-old is dead and two other people are injured after a crash on Howard Road near state Route 2 late Monday night.

The crash happened around 9:45 p.m. Monday when 20-year-old Cody Slinker, who was driving, lost control of the 97 Ford Mustang and drove off the road, causing it to flip multiple times.

The 14-year-old, who was killed in the crash, was reportedly sitting in the vehicle's passenger seat and was not wearing his seatbelt. He was ejected from the car during the crash and pinned underneath the vehicle. The teen was pronounced dead at the scene.

Slinker and a 16-year-old passenger, who was sitting in the backseat, were both taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

Ohio State Highway Patrol Lieutenant Bowers wants to stress to young drivers the importance of safe driving habits and being aware of their surroundings to prevent accidents like this one.

"In 2013 60% of the people killed in Lucas County did not have a seat belt on. That's unacceptable. People need to be wearing their seat belts. Obey the traffic laws, go the speed limit, obey the laws, and make sure you don't have too many people in the vehicle," said Lieutenant Bowers.

Bowers says the tires on the Mustang were not suitable to be on the road. The cause of the crash is still under investigation and it's possible the driver could be cited when it's finished.

Oregon Schools Superintendent Dr. Lonny Rivera says the 14-year-old victim went to Fassett Junior High. The school has extra counseling on hand for anyone who may need it until further notice. Rivera says the school district is doing anything it can to help friends and family during this difficult and tragic time.
