Auburn to hold 2014 Drug Take Back event

AUBURN, AL (WTVM) -

East Alabama residents are joining a national effort toproperly dispose of all unused, unwanted and expired prescription and over thecounter drugs.

The Auburn Police Division and Auburn University School ofPharmacy are partnering to host the 2014 Drug Take Back event on April 26,2014, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Our Home Pharmacy, located at 2320 Moore's MillRd, at the Ogletree Rd. intersection in Auburn, Ala.

The National Drug Take Back Initiative is sponsored by theDrug Enforcement Administration (DEA), and hosted by local agencies to providea safe and anonymous way to dispose of unused or unwanted prescription drugsproperly.

Members of the Auburn University School of Pharmacy and theAuburn Police Division will be at Our Home Pharmacy to collect any prescriptiondrugs that need to be discarded. No information will be collected from thepublic related to the items dropped off for disposal.

According to Capt. Will Mathews, last year's event resultedin the safe disposal of more than 100 pounds of various medications.

"We collected everything from baby aspirin to powerfulchemotherapy medications at our last event", said Mathews. "Members of theSchool of Pharmacy were surprised at the wide variety of medications that wereceived, as well as the age of the prescriptions. The oldest prescriptionreceived last year was from 1972."

The pharmacy students will destroy any personal informationthat is affixed to the medication prior to submitting the items for disposal.
