GRETNA, LA (WVUE) -

Gretna Police said they arrested all three suspects wanted in the murder of a cab driver.

Police spokesman Chief Anthony Christiana said Blake Helmer, a cab driver for Glenn's Cab, was shot during an armed robbery shortly after 8 p.m. Tuesday night near the corner of Rupp and Franklin. Christiana said several calls began coming in to police about shots fired, and residents reported seeing three men running from the scene.

Christiana said officers arrested one of the suspects, 17-year-old Jonah Brown, after officers chased him on foot into Algiers Tuesday night. Police said Wednesday morning they arrested two other suspects, 19-year-old Tavon Corley and 18-year-old Ivory Warren.

The police chief called the crime a "senseless act by thugs." He said Helmer had no time to respond to a "barrage" of gunfire from the back seat of his cab.

Brown and Warren face 1st degree murder charges, while officers booked Corley with accessory to 1st degree murder.

All three suspects are believed to be connected to a number of robberies on the west bank, both in Orleans and Jefferson parishes, according to Christiana.

Christiana said the cab driver, Blake Helmer, was a long time employee of Glenn's Cab, a Gretna based company.  He's driven cabs for more than 20 years. Officers was known by police for giving free rides to a disabled man.
