Appeal hearings scheduled for 3 Selma school administrators

Posted: Updated:
SELMA, AL (WSFA) -

The dates are set for the three Selma City Schools administrators to explain why they should keep their jobs.

Former superintendent Gerald Shirley, Mamie Solomon and Wanda McCall are appealing the intervention team's recommendation that they be fired.

McCall's hearing is scheduled for June 9, Solomon's is scheduled for June 11 and Shirley's is scheduled for June 13. Each starts at 8:30 a.m. in the Gordon Persons Building in downtown Montgomery.

Shirley, McCall and Solomon have been suspended with pay since the take-over team intervened weeks ago.

The investigation initially started last fall when former Selma High School teacher LaTangela Williams was accused of having sex with two students. Williams later pleaded guilty to the charges and fired earlier this month. The court sentenced Williams to 14 months in the Dallas County jail earlier this month.

From the very beginning the probe exploded with more allegations of grade-changing, glaring fiscal mismanagement and procedures not being followed. State intervention team leader Dr. Larry DiChiara told WSFA 12 News while the evidence is strong, the decision to recommend the terminations was not necessarily an easy one to make.

"I tell people I've cried more over kids than I have over the decision because some of the things that happened to some of these kids are very disturbing," DiChiara said.

Meantime, WSFA 12 News has learned that six more school employees have received either a warning, letters of reprimand or outright suspensions. Three of the six have either quit or retired.

As for the future, DiChiara says there will be a new superintendent for the Selma City School district but not right away.

With these personnel issues largely behind him, DiChiara says they are making progress in correcting the problems within the school district but still a good ways to go.

DiChiara estimates the take-over will last at least another year.
