COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - The man hoping to unseat Columbus Mayor Teresa Tomlinson received a big endorsement Wednesday night.
The Fraternal Order of Police and its 600 members have thrown their support behind challenger Colin Martin. FOP president Randy Robertson says the overwhelming choice to endorse martin comes for several different reasons.
"Colin Martin is willing to listen, willing to sit down to communicate with not only the individual law enforcement officers, but heads of individual law enforcement agencies," said Randy Robertson with the Fraternal Order of Police.
Mayor Teresa Tomlinson tells News Leader 9 this endorsement is not about public safety, but about the budget.
"The FOP official who led this charge is the same individual responsible for the sheriff's budget, which has been $9.5 million dollars over budget in just six years," she said in a statement.
The Mayor went on to say "had the FOP leadership allowed an opportunity for their membership to hear from both candidates it is doubtful that they would have come to such an endorsement."
Voters go to the polls in this race on May 20. Early voting is already underway.
