FORT BENNING, GA (WTVM) -

After relinquishing command of the Installation Management Command on April 16, LTG Michael Ferriter, a former Maneuver Center of Excellence and Fort Benning commanding general, has chosen to retire at Fort Benning.

A retirement ceremony for Ferriter took place on York Field Friday morning, May 2. Vice chief of staff of the Army, GEN John Campbell, was the reviewing officer for the ceremony.

"So many great friends and colleagues have called in the last couple days and you know I'm a paratrooper and a ranger and I told them," said Ferriter. "You know what? I'm on the plane, I got a chute on, I'm hooked up to the line, the doors open, and I'm going out of it tomorrow morning, and you know I'm gonna hit the earth, 'cause you never miss and where that takes me after that we'll just see."

Ferriter was first assigned to Fort Benning as a student in the Infantry Officer Basic Course, and also attended the Infantry Officer Advanced Course. He returned to serve with the 75th Ranger Regiment from October 1986 to June 1989. From July 1996 to June 1998 Ferriter commanded the 3rd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment.

After a tour at Fort Bragg, N.C., where he commanded the 2nd Battalion, 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82nd Airborne Division, he returned to Fort Benning to command the 11th Infantry Regiment from June 1999 to July 2001.

His most recent assignments at Fort Benning were at the US Army Infantry Center and commandant of the Infantry School from June 2009 to October 2009, and as the Commanding General of the Maneuver Center of Excellence and Fort Benning from October 2009 to November 2010.
