Silver Wings drop into St. Anne-Pacelli School's field day

Posted: Updated:

Students at St. Anne-Pacelli School had a couple of surprise guests drop in on their field day Friday, May 2.

All 600 or so students were outside enjoying lunch when something appeared in the sky. It was the Silver Wings Parachute Team from Fort Benning.

The jumpers made their trademark swirling designs in the air with purple smoke while descending to their mark on the St. Anne-Pacelli football field. And to add to the excitement, none of the students knew they were coming.

"Usually it's hard to keep a surprise at a school," says St. Anne-Pacelli Lower School Principal Gayla Arrington. "But we were able to keep any of them from knowing. So they were excited about a picnic lunch. Then, they showed up, and realized that we had the jump."

Arrington says the connection between the school and the military has been growing over the past couple of years. Currently, 25 percent of the students enrolled at St. Anne-Pacelli are from military families.
