Smiths Station woman dies one week after dog attack

PHENIX CITY, AL (WTVM) -

A 20-year-old woman from Smith Station passed away at Grady Memorial Hospital Saturday night at about 7:30 PM, according to the Lee County Coroner.

He said Katie Morrison died from complications after the severe injuries she received when three pit bulls attacked her on April 28, 2014. She suffered a severe head injury and multiple laceration wounds over her body according to a statement from his office.

Morrison was spending time with four dogs and their owner Monday in the home's backyard in the Heather Brooke neighborhood in east Lee County. The statement explains that a dog attacked Morrison when she knelt down to pick something up. Soon, two other dogs joined in and attacked Morrison.

She was rushed to Midtown Medical Center in Columbus. Then she was transferred to Atlanta.

According to Sheriff Jay Jones, the dogs' owner is not charged with a crime. Sheriff Jones said the the status of the case has not been changed due to the death. The Sheriff explained that the case will still be presented to a grand jury at a later date.
