AUTAUGA CO., AL (WSFA) -

A man who officials say was caught red-handed stealing and then ran from a sheriff's deputy in Autauga County was tracked and located by the county's new canine officer.

According to Chief Deputy Joe Sedinger with the Autauga County Sheriff's Office, a local man was on his way to work at the paper mill in Prattville and decided to stop and check on a property he owns on County Road 83 in the Jones community around 8 a.m.

When he pulled up, Sedinger says the owner found two men stealing copper, wire and other metal from the property and confronted the alleged thieves, holding them at gunpoint until authorities arrived.

According to Sedinger, when the first deputy got to the scene, he handcuffed the suspects and was placing them in his squad car when one of them pushed the deputy and ran, jumping into a nearby creek and taking off in to the woods as the deputy called for back-up.

The county's new K-9 officer, Kane, was brought in and within an hour, the suspect was found and taken into custody. Officials say he was taken to the hospital with minor injuries he sustained during the chase when Kane bit him on the ankle.

William James Kent, 33, of Prattville has been charged with resisting arrest and escape. His bond was set at $33,300. More charges are pending, according to the sheriff's office.

Daniel James Metcalf, 28, of Deatsville has been charged with theft, trespass and criminal mischief. His bond was set at $45,500.
