COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) -

Columbus Police are searching for a man on the lam who ran away from a traffic stop Monday evening.

Witnesses say a motorcycle officer was taking a report at an unrelated accident on Ace Way Dr. at about 5:30 p.m. that evening. A man in a red pick-up truck drove by the scene, and the officer recognized him as a person wanted by police.

A witness says the officer tried to stop the man at the corner of Morris Rd.

"They were talking to the driver, and the driver just jumped out and started running. Police chased him down there, and then the officer came back and hopped on his bike and went down there. I believe the driver had a warrant," says Michaela Brown, who was at the scene at the time.

Officers searched the woods along the railroad tracks between Morris Rd. and Illges Rd. but were unable to find the driver.

No word from police on what the man is wanted for.
