Body Be 1 to host event benefiting The Backpack Buddies

PHENIX CITY, AL (WTVM) -

According to the USDA, more than 1 in 5 children are at risk of hunger. Those figures increase to 1 in 3 among African-Americans and Latinos across the nation.

With such looming statistics and local evidence of its accuracy; a regional business is taking a stand.

Body B 1, a fitness and personal training center with locations in Columbus, Georgia and Phenix City, Alabama is hosting their first ever 5K Run / 3K Walk.

A portion of proceeds will support the efforts of Food4Kids Backpack Buddies, a nonprofit organization working to combat weekend hunger of children whose only meals may be those which are school supplied.

The general public is being asked to gather families, friends and communities to run/walk to show love and concern to children who need our help. The goal is to register 200 participants.

The race takes place Saturday, May 31 at Lakewood Baptist Church, located at 4011 Lakewood Drive in Phenix City. Registration begins at 6:30 a.m. and the race begins at 8 a.m.

"We want to make this an annual event for years to come," said Roland Huff, owner of Body Be 1 who also helped develop the race. "We must do the work necessary to take care of our kids because we need them to be great."

The cause is sponsored by St. Francis Hospital, Columbus Cottonmouths Mouse, and Greystone Properties.

Food4Kids Backpack Buddies works in conjunction with local nonprofit organization Feeding The Valley.
