WEST POINT, GA (WTVM) -

The family of 41-year-old West Point resident James Garner is looking for answers to why their loved one has not returned home in over a year.

"We're trying to make this news fresh and we are trying to reach out to the public who can assist us a let us know what they know about his disappearance," explains the family's attorney, Eric Hutchins.

Garner was last seen on May 3, 2013 when he was released on a public intoxication charge after spending two days in the Chambers County Jail.

It is believed he was trying to get to Lanett.

Family members say it is out of character for Garner to not check in with his mother or come to collect any of his belongings.

"It's unlike him to disappear without a word. He is a grown man, he's free to do whatever he wants, but on a daily basis he's going to come to the house and check-in. Not to come and get clothes, no toothbrush, no personal hygiene and I don't see how a person can disappear into thin air," says James' cousin, Marc Garner.

At a press conference Tuesday, Hutchins says they have obtained a video of Garner leaving the jail on May 3, 2013.

Even though we have been unable to obtain a copy of this video, the family believes it shows Garner to look disheveled as if he suffered some kind of medical emergency while incarcerated.

"We ended up doing an open records request, getting video of him being released from the jail and from looking at the video we can see him walking out and appears to be disoriented," explains Hutchins.

Both Alabama and Georgia Agencies performed a massive search effort for Garner last May and the Chambers County Sheriff's Department says they followed protocol on attempts to locate him.

The Garner family is organizing a second search party for James in coming weeks.

"Whether it's bad news, whether its god news, whether his body is found somewhere, whether he's alive somewhere, we just want some answers and some closure," says Garner.

If you have any information concerning the whereabouts of James Gardner you are asked to contact your local authorities.
