TARRANT, AL (WBRC) -

A seven-year-old boy is being called a hero for saving his mother.

Alex Guerrero is a bright first grader at Tarrant Elementary School. Last Saturday, Alex was presented with a serious situation involving his mother, Carolyn Duffey.

"The only thing I remember is going upstairs and coming back down, falling down the steps," Duffey said.

Duffey had struck her head and fell unconscious. Guerrero immediately knew something was wrong.

"I was in my room and I heard her fall down and I love her," he said.

And because of that love, Alex sprung into action and called 9-1-1 on Duffey's cellphone, just like she had taught him to do.

"We received a 9-1-1 call at the police department. A young man, seven years of age, called in saying his mother was unresponsive," Tarrent Police Officer Kevin Smith said.

Smith, who is the school resource officer Tarrant Elementary School, says the dispatcher got Alex to get a piece of mail so he could read the address. Help arrived a short time later, possibly saving Duffey's life.

"From what I'm told by the medics he potentially saved his mother's life," Smith said.

"It's heartbreaking to tell you the truth. I don't know where I would be if not for him," Duffey said of her son.

While many are calling Guerrero a hero, Duffey says the biggest message here is that any child can take charge and call for help if the situation arises.

"It's important parents teach their kids to dail 9-1-1 and what to say if something happens," Duffey said.

Guerrero's teachers say he is quick learner but he believes others can learn this valuable lesson: take care of your mom.

The Tarrant City Council plans to recognize Guerrero May 19 and the school board will honor him May 20. The Birmingham Barons have also offered the family four box seat tickets and a chance to throw the first pitch at a game.
