VALLEY, AL (WTVM) -

It was any other normal Wednesday in Valley.

A group of students from W.F. Burns Middle School boarded a Chambers County school bus Wednesday afternoon and started their regular route home until a strange substance caused a bad reaction.

"We got a call from a school bus driver who stopped in front of the Valley Fire Department on Fob James Drive. One of the students had actually gotten off the bus and made contact with a fireman and requested an ambulance to help the bus driver," explains Chief Tommy Weldon of the Valley Police Department.

When officers arrived at the scene they discovered the bus driver and a student were having an allergic reaction to that unknown substance.

Both were transported to Lanier Hospital and have since been released.

Witnesses say the odor on the bus smelled like baby powder, but the initial investigation found no physical evidence on the bus or on students of any type of powder.

"Any type of aerosol spray whether its perfume or cologne, to anyone that has asthma or sensitive allergies it can affect people in a negative way and I think that the case in this situation," says Weldon.

Authorities have obtained video from the school bus and the school resource officer is currently interviewing a group of middles schoolers.

Students arrived home about 45 minutes later than usual Wednesday after another bus driver was brought in to finish the route.

"Because this did happen on a school bus the discipline will be handled by the school administration," says Weldon, "and I don't know what the punishment will be."
