COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) -

University of South Carolina junior wide receiver Bruce Ellington is heading west.

With the 106th overall pick in the 2014 NFL Draft, the San Francisco 49ers drafted the standout receiver.

"The phone was ringing and I picked it up and it was San Francisco," Ellington said Saturday at his family's home in Moncks Corner. "It's just exciting to be out here and it's a blessing and I'm just happy my family can see this. There's greater things in life that you can see in everything you do and you just have to keep working at it and keep God first and you'll be alright."

Last season, Ellington was the top receiver with 49 catches for 775 yards and eight touchdowns.

In the Capital One Bowl win over Wisconsin, Ellington caught six passes for a career-high 140 yards and two scores and also threw a 9-yard touchdown to Connor Shaw.

Ellington recorded 1,586 receiving yards in his South Carolina career.

He was a two-sport standout who also played three games for the men's basketball team before giving up the sport to dedicate his full attention to the NFL Draft.

"Coming into the draft, you never know who's going to get you," Ellington said. "I was just ready for the call. I am just excited for whoever called me. I'm happy that I can be a part of that team."

Ellington will join former Gamecock and current 49ers running back Marcus Lattimore.

"I haven't talked to him," Ellington said. "He's actually one of the guys who when I first got to Carolina, I played basketball, so he was one of the guys that told me to come out and play football. He's a leader and I know the work ethic he has… You know being with Lattimore, the hard work he does, you know, he had two surgeries and to come back and still play football, it's just a blessing for him and a blessing for me to be together."

Ellington is the second Gamecock taken in the 2014 NFL Draft, joining defensive end Jadeveon Clowney, who was selected by the Houston Texans with the first pick in the draft.

"I'm just ready to come in there and work," Ellington said. "[They] told me just be ready to compete and I'm ready for that. I'm ready to compete against anybody."
