COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) -

A local school newspaper is being awarded for its quality work.

Shaw High School's publication The Silver Star earned the Freedom of the Press Award and an Achievement Award from the Georgia Scholastic Press Association (GSPA).

The GSPA grants this award as a way to encourage students and high school media programs to produce great work. They also sponsors an annual contest critiquing high school media across the state.

Shaw's Journalism advisor, Mona Griffin, is retiring this year, and won the title of GSPA 2014 Adviser of the Year. She says, "What a way to go out. You always want to go out on top, and this is just the best. I've been walking on air for the last month. So, it's the best."

The Silver Star is a full color magazine produced by students covering light-hearted, as well as more serious stories, dealing with issues that are important to teenagers.

The magazine is published four times a year.
