(WTVM) -

While on a vacation to the Bahamas, a Columbus family saved a woman who was close to death. The Crain family had just left their cruise ship and were on the beach at Half Moon Cay, when it happened.

They say they were taking pictures of fish in the clear water when they noticed a woman who they thought was just snorkeling. But a young girl said she didn't think the woman knew how to swim.

Dan Crain says as soon as he touched the woman in the water and she didn't respond he knew something was wrong.

"I threw her the camera and then kind of lifted her up…a good three minutes that the beach was completely quiet," they say.

Crain got the woman to shore where the paramedics took over. They moved her to the cruise ship where ICU nurses on board helped her until a chopper took her to a Nassau hospital. As of Sunday, the woman was still at the Fort Lauderdale hospital on a ventilator without any brain damage.
