Juveniles caught breaking into Phenix City church, may be connected to other church burglaries

PHENIX CITY, AL (WTVM) -

Police believe two juveniles caught breaking into a church in Phenix City may have been involved in other similar church burglaries in Columbus, Ga.

At 12:30 a.m. on Tuesday, May 13, Phenix City Police say they responded to an alarm call at First Baptist Church located at 2608 Summerville Rd. When they arrived, they discovered a broken window and open door to the church.

Two suspects attempted to run from the officers, and after a foot chase, were taken into custody without further incident.

The two male juveniles were charged with Burglary 3rd Degree.

Lt. George Staudinger says the incident does not appear to be connected to the North Phenix Baptist copper pipes theft.

However, he says he has reached out to the Columbus Police Department with the possibility of the two suspects being connected to the Evangel Temple theft caught on surveillance camera on May 5.

A connection has not been confirmed at this time.
