Second Phenix City Superintendent candidate withdraws


A second finalist for Phenix City Superintendent has withdrawn his candidacy.

Dr. Craig Ross has been hired as superintendent of Cullman County, Alabama.

Former candidate Kenneth Burton withdrew his candidacy on May 13. Burton said the following in a letter to the School Board:

"After consideration and deliberation with my family, I have decided to withdraw from candidacy consideration for the position Superintendent of the Phenix School District. I make this decision reluctantly, however, at this time there are many unfinished projects in Opelika that I would like to see completed. Thanking you in advance for your consideration."

Dr. Irma Townsend and Dr. Christopher Quinn remain finalists for the position. Their interviews, which will be open to the public, will take place on the following dates:

Dr. Irma Townsend – Wednesday, May 21, 2014
Dr. Christopher Quinn—Tuesday, May 27, 2014

The schedule for each interview will be as follows:

1 p.m. – The candidate will arrive at the Educational Services Center and be met by Dr. Rod Hinton, Interim Superintendent, and Board Members. The candidate will be given a tour of the Board's facilities and the City of Phenix City as time permits.

5 p.m. – Interview shall be held in the auditorium of Central High School, 2400 Dobbs Drive, Phenix City. The interview is open to the public and all parents, students, employees, citizens of Phenix City and other interested individuals are invited to attend.

6 p.m. or immediately following the conclusion of the interview – The candidate will be available to meet and speak with those in attendance.

The Phenix City Board of Education has released the following summaries of the candidates' qualifications for the position of Superintendent:

Dr. Christopher Randolph Quinn

Dr. Quinn is currently employed as the Assistant Superintendent for Instruction for the Stafford County Public Schools in Stafford, Virginia. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Augusta College; a Master of Education degree from Augusta College; and a Doctor of Philosophy in Education Administration from State University of New York at Buffalo.

Dr. Quinn has been employed as a Middle School/High School Teacher, Richmond County Schools, Augusta, Georgia, from 1979 to 1984; an Administrative Assistant to the Superintendent, Williamsville Schools, Williamsville, New York, from 1987 to 1988; High School Assistant Principal/Wilkes County Schools, Washington, Georgia, from 1989-1992; High School Assistant Principal/Walton County Schools, Monroe, Georgia, from1992-1995; Middle School/High School Principal/ Bartow County Schools, Cartersville, Georgia, from 1995- 1997; High School Principal/ Appling County Schools, Baxley, Georgia, from 1997-1998; Executive Director of Curriculum/Liberty County Schools, Hinesville, Georgia, from 1998-2001; Assistant Superintendent Leadership/Evaluation/ Buffalo Public Schools, Buffalo, New York, from 2001-2003; Executive Assistant to Superintendent and Superintendent/Dublin City Schools, Dublin, Georgia, from 2003-2005 and his current position from 2005 to present.

Dr. Quinn holds a Division Superintendent License issued by the Virginia Board of Education, Commonwealth of Virginia, and a Georgia Educator Certificate in Educational Leadership, Georgia Professional Standards Commission, State of Georgia.

Dr. Irma W. Townsend

Dr. Townsend is currently employed as the Director of Human Resources and Student Services Supervisor for the Enterprise City Board of Education, Enterprise, Alabama. Dr. Townsend holds a Bachelor of Science Degree from Auburn University; a Master of Education Degree from Auburn University; a School Administration/Supervision Certification from Troy University, Dothan, and a Doctor of Education Degree in Counselor Education and Supervision from Auburn University.

Dr. Townsend has been employed as a Teacher/LaGrange City Board of Education from 1982-1983; a Teacher/ Ozark City Board of Education, Ozark, Alabama, from 1984-1985; a Teacher/Dale County Board of Education, Ozark, Alabama, from 1985-1986; a Teacher/Enterprise City Board of Education, Enterprise, Alabama, from1986-1989; a Counselor/Coffee County Board of Education, Elba, Alabama, from 1990-1992; an Attendance Supervisor/Enterprise City Board of Education, Enterprise, Alabama, from 1992-1996; a Principal/Sonshine Christian School, Ozark, Alabama, from 1996-1998; an Adjunct Professor/Troy University, Dothan, Alabama, from 1997-2003; a Principal/Coffee County Board of Education, Elba, Alabama, from 1998-2003; a Parent Project Facilitator/Coffee County Family Services and District Court, Enterprise, Alabama, from 2010 to present; and her current position from 2003-present.

Dr. Townsend holds the following licenses issued by the Alabama State Department of Education: a Professional Certificate, Class B, Secondary, Grades 6-12; a Professional Certificate, Class A, School Counselor, Grades P-12 and a Leadership Certificate, Class A, Principal, Grades P-12.
