VALLEY, AL (WTVM) - The community in Valley, Ala. is getting ready to honor a fallen soldier.
On Saturday, May 24, there will be a Memorial Day Walk for Sergeant Brandon Hadaway. The walk will honor other fallen soldiers as well.
His little sister Brittany McDonald stopped by our studios Thursday morning to speak about the walk.
"Brandon was always just a big kid. Everybody that knew him just knew that if they were around Brandon, they'd be having a good time," Brittany said of her older brother. "So many people fell in love with him. When he went off to Afghanistan the third time, he'd made an impression on all the soldiers. Everybody knew him."
May 30, 2014 will have been seven years since he passed away.
Brittany tells us that one of their cousins came up with the idea for the walk after she dreamed about it.
"It's been seven years, so she knew this was the time for healing," Brittany said. "Our family's been through a lot, so now we're glad that we can do this."
We asked Brittany how it made her feel that in addition to her family supporting Brandon, the community is coming together for this event as well.
"When Brandon was first killed, I remember our community just completely came out. Everybody came out. It was so wonderful, and our hearts were so filled and just overwhelmed with the way our community did it. So to have that happen seven years later for people to show such support, it is such a blessing."
The walk will start at 10 a.m. at the Fairfax Congregational Holiness Church, rain or shine. Participants will walk a mile and half to the Fairview Cemetery.
