Groton police pursuit leads to juvenile arrest

A juvenile was arrested after a police pursuit took place in Groton on Friday afternoon.

At about 2:45 p.m. on Friday, a Groton police officer attempted to stop a vehicle on Poquonnock Rd. near the Groton Shopper's Mart.

According to police, the vehicle was wanted in connection to an earlier reported hit and run accident that happened at another shopping center. The vehicle fled from the officer who pursued the suspect.

The suspect drove into another shopping center and then got out of his moving car and fled on foot. According to police, concerned witnesses pointed to the direction the suspect fled and officers were able to locate him.

The suspect was attempting to hide in a bathroom of a local business when police found him. Groton police officers took the suspect into custody.

The vehicle the suspect was driving came to a stop after hitting a parked car. According to police, the vehicle was stolen from the scene of a residential burglary in the city of Norwich.

Officers discovered a loaded shotgun in the stolen vehicle. The shotgun was stolen, but not from the residential burglary, according to police.

The suspect is being identified as a 16-year-old male from Norwich. He is charged with multiple offenses including criminal possession of a firearm, engaging an officer in pursuit, larceny 3rd degree by possession and operating a motor vehicle without a license.

According to police the suspect was placed in custody at the Juvenile Detention Center in Hartford because of the seriousness of his offenses.

The Groton Town Police Department is extending their thanks to the citizens who helped find the suspect quickly.
