City Council District 1 candidates gear up for election night

Posted: Updated:
COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) -

Candidates running for Columbus City Council District One are also gearing up for the big night.

This could be a close race. Jerry "Pops" Barnes is seeking re-election and challenger Zeph Baker, a former candidate for Columbus mayor, is vying for this position on Columbus City Council.

Barnes was elected to that spot in November 2006. Barnes says he's running again because he's concerned about the rise in crime in the Fountain City and the lack of recreational opportunities for city youth and seniors.

Baker, who ran for Columbus mayor in 2010, says he's running for council because he wants to reduce crime and bring business back into the community.

City Council District One represents the city from Macon Road to St. Mary's Road.

Polls are open until 7 p.m. Tuesday night, and the race for Columbus City Council District One is not a primary election.

Also, make sure you know your assigned polling center for voting.

News Leader 9 will continue to cover the city council election race throughout our evening shows tonight.
