WEST POINT, GA (WTVM) -

A $20,000 Georgia Lottery prize has emerged for a West Point grandfather who was a grand prize winner from a second chance promotion. John Strother, 50, was selected as a big winner in the Georgia Lottery's $1 & $2 Play It Again Second Chance Promotion.

He won his prize recently in Atlanta.

As a monthly cash prize winner in the Georgia Lottery's $1 & $2 Play It Again Second Chance Promotion, Strother won a chance to select one envelope from 20, with prizes ranging from $5,000 to $100,000.

He chose envelope No. 15 and won a $20,000 prize.

"On the day that I found out I'd won, I'd decided on the No. 15," Strother explained. "I just went with my gut feeling."

In addition to a four-year-old grandson, Strother and his wife, Kim, have an adult daughter. The winnings will go toward her wedding, which is planned for mid-summer.

"Winning feels great. I feel wonderful," Strother said.

Since its first year, the Georgia Lottery Corp. has returned more than $15.3 billion to the state of Georgia for education. All Georgia Lottery profits go to pay for specific educational programs, including Georgia's HOPE Scholarship Program and Georgia's Pre-K Program. More than 1.6 million students have received HOPE, and more than 1.3 million 4-year-olds have attended the statewide, voluntary prekindergarten program.
