Whitewater Express expecting crowds Memorial Day weekend

COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - People will be hitting the roads as they celebrate Memorial Day this weekend, but those who are staying in town, there will be lot of activities happening here in the Chattahoochee Valley as well.

Callaway Gardens is hosting their Masters Water Ski and Wakeboard Tournament from May 23 to May 25 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The NAIA Softball National Championship will take place at the South Commons Softball Complex in Columbus from May 23 to May 29. Whitewater Express is expecting to have more than 500 people go down to the river this weekend.

Whitewater Express has been active for one year now. They saw about 16,000 customers in 2013 and just last weekend the crew had about 250 people go down the river. Richard Bishop, CEO of Uptown Columbus, says Whitewater Express expects to see more customers once they install their newest ride.

"Zip line is under design…I can't give a complete date just yet but we are hoping within the next few weeks to get to the design so we can send it to both Phenix City and Columbus to get the permits in place. Still working on those final costs but our objective is to make it affordable so that we can get lot of people on it and get lot of people involved," says Bishop.

Bishop says Whitewater Express is hoping to have the zip line system completed by this summer.
