Memorial Day travel and activities for 2014

As Memorial Day unofficially kicks off the summer travelseason, TripAdvisor is announcing the results of their summer travel survey ofmore than 2,500 U.S. respondents.

The survey found that 34 percent of Americans will be travelingfor Memorial Day in 2014, which is up from 27 percent in 2013. Nearly 74% ofthose traveling will be driving to their destination, and 33 percent of thosedriving will be hitting the road on Friday, May 23. Thirty-eight percent ofthem plan to return home on Monday, May 26. 

Only nine percent cited the harsh winter as an inspirationfor their trip this weekend.

The survey also highlighted other aspects of the holiday,such as the most popular Memorial Day activities:

Attending a cookout or BBQ
Shopping
Swimming or watersports
Visiting a park or national park
Taking a sightseeing tour

Besides Memorial Day, the survey also found that 89 percentof US respondents are planning a leisure summer trip in 2014. From June 1 toAug. 31, 66 percent will travel domestically. Below are the top US destinationsfor the 2014 travel period:

Myrtle Beach, South Carolina
Las Vegas, Nevada
New York City, New York
Destin, Florida
Ocean City, Maryland

The most popular types of summer vacations are:
Beach/Ocean escape
City vacation
National park visit

Top Summer Activities:
Shopping
Swimming/watersports
Visiting a historical site or event

Favorite Summer Food Indulgences:
18 percent said they would splurge on ice cream
14 percent would reach for a lobster
9 percent look forward to watermelon

Top Summer Beverages:
16 percent will drink beer
11 percent will have a margarita
3.9 percent will enjoy lemonade
