(CNN) - Americans are remembering the nation's fallen heroes Monday, the men and women who have given their lives in defense of the nation.

As Memorial Day ceremonies and tributes happened in cities across the country, President Barack Obama participated in a wreath-laying ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery.

"Everything that we hold precious in this country was made possible by Americans who gave their all, and because of them, our nation is stronger, safer, and will always remain a shining beacon of freedom for the rest of the world," Obama said.

The president also laid a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.
