Feeding the Valley receives $83,000 contribution from Walmart

Familiesin need in the Chattahoochee Valley have been given an extra hand this summerfrom one of America's largest corporations.

Feedingthe Valley announced Tuesday, May 27, that the Walmart Foundation State GivingProgram has contributed $83,000 to the organization to assist with feedingfamilies in need. Feeding the Valley representatives say the grant will be usedto purchase new distribution equipment, specifically two forklifts and onecontainer freezer unit.

"Weare extremely grateful for Walmart's generous donation," said Frank Sheppard,executive director of Feeding the Valley. "The grant allows us to expand our fooddistribution throughout West Georgia and the ability to feed significantly morepeople."

Feeding the Valley says their purpose is toshare its bounty with hungry residents through a regional distribution planthat dramatically improves food storage and distribution capacities in its 14county region. The food bank distributes more than 600,000 pounds of foodmonthly to counties including Meriwether, Troup, Harris, Talbot, Marion,Muscogee, Russell, Chattahoochee, Clay, Quitman, Randolph, Schley, Stewart andWebster.

"Walmartis very excited to continue supporting Feeding the Valley and dedicated tohelping the communities we serve," said Glen Wilkins, director of publicaffairs and government relations at Walmart. "The grant will help theorganization reach its 10-year growth plan to more than double the number ofpeople it feeds on an annual basis."

TheWalmart Foundation awards grants to organizations that have a long-lasting,positive impact on communities across the country. In Georgia, a team of localassociates determine needs within each state, review eligible grantapplications and make funding recommendations to the Walmart Foundation. To beconsidered for support, prospective grantee organizations must submitapplications through the Walmart Foundation State Giving Program's online grantapplication. Eligible applicants must have a current 501(c)(3) tax-exemptstatus in order to meet the program's minimum funding criteria.
