Maya Angelou poem visits Georgia, references Columbus

COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) -

Maya Angelou was well-known for incorporating parts of her life into each of her literary works.

"A Georgia Song," a poem written by Angelou, speaks of southern American life. In the poem, cities like Savannah, Atlanta, and even Columbus are mentioned.

It is like many of her works that dealt with civil rights and slavery.

The author has also visited the state; one of the occasions was for a conference in Atlanta in 2006.

She also visited that same year for the funeral of Coretta Scott King, the wife of civil rights activist Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

She was a speaker at the funeral which was held in Lithonia, Ga.
