AU introduces magnet laboratory for plasma research

Posted: Updated:

Auburn University's College of Sciences and Mathematics introduced a one-of-a-kind magnet laboratory, and a 6,000 lb. superconducting magnet at an open house Thursday, May 29.

The facility, housed in the department of physics, will support plasma physics research for Auburn University faculty and students, as well as national and international scientists who will come to Auburn to perform experimental studies.

Edward Thomas, Physics Professor at AU, says, "It's absolutely amazing. This is a project that we have been working on for a very long time to have it funded, and now to be operational is really like a dream come true."

The magnet will allow researchers to shape the structure of the magnetic field and as a result, perform potentially ground-breaking experiments.
