Phenix City man speaks after dogs attack, kill friend

About a month after a young woman died from was attacked by dogs in Phenix City, one of the owners of the dogs is now speaking out about what he believes happened that day.

On April 28, 20-year-old Katie Morrison was spending time with her friend's three dogs when she was suddenly attacked. She later died from her injuries in an Atlanta Hospital.

The dogs have since been put to sleep.

Steve Klemmetti, owner of the three dogs, said his wife was outside with Morrison the day of the attack, and Morrison had been around the dogs before.

Klemmetti believes that when Morrison bent down to retrieve a tennis ball they were playing with, the dogs went instinctual when she was down at their level, mistaking Morrison's ponytail for a rope toy.

Morrison suffered and died from a severe head injury and multiple laceration wounds.

Since the incident, Klemmetti and his wife made the decision to put down the dogs due to safety issues and concerns from neighbors.

Despite rumors, Klemmetti says his dogs were a mixed breed, and the past month has been very difficult for him and his wife. He says his dogs had never hurt anyone before this incident, and the whole thing was a freak accident.

A grand jury will review the case. No charges have been filed against the owners at this time.
